Cut. Color. Clarity. Carat Weight.

Are you ready to pop the question? Do you want to know more about diamonds so that you can make an informed purchase? For a first timer, purchasing a diamond may seem like an overwhelming task.  Don’t worry, at Zembar Jewelers, we’ve got you covered.  We can help you sort through the options and educate you on diamond buying. We will teach you the 4 C’s of diamond buying: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. These are the ways you can determine a diamond’s quality and value. With knowledge under your belt, you can feel comfortable in knowing that you will get the best diamond that your money can buy.

Don’t worry, beautiful diamonds can fit almost any budget and we can help you choose the perfect one!

Cut has the greatest effect on the beauty found in a diamond. The grader evaluates the skill in fashioning the cut of the diamond and uses technology to assess the diamond’s light performance. The more precise the cut, the more the diamond captivates the eye.

A diamond’s color is a measure of the stone’s whiteness, which means it is actually measuring the lack of color that a diamond has. Most diamonds, although the look colorless, actually have slight tones of yellow or brown. For most people, the difference between colorless and near colorless is hard to see. As the imperfect tones of yellow or brown become more easily apparent, the stone is considered less rare and it’s cost decreases.

The clarity of a diamond refers to the presence (or lack) of imperfections. Practically all diamonds contain naturally occurring internal characteristics called inclusions. The size, number, position, and nature of inclusions determine a diamond’s clarity grade and affect the cost. Generally, the more imperfections (or inclusions) a diamond has, the lower the clarity.

Carat Weight

A Carat is the unit of measurement to determine a diamond’s weight. It is also known as Carat Weight, which is used as the standard unit of weight for gems, as well. One carat (ct.) is equal to 0.2. Carats are then divided into 100 points. So a quarter-carat has 25 points and is written as 0.25 carats, or ¼ carat.

Diamond Shape

Diamonds come in a number of shapes. Picking a shape for the main stone in an engagement ring will dictate the style of that ring. While a solitaire ring will have just one main stone and shape, many engagement rings have the main stone with different shaped stones surrounding it, highlighting the center stone.   Some of the most popular diamond shapes are: Round, Pear, Princess, Heart, Emerald, Baquette, Marquise, and Oval.
